Clear your head and get ready for lift off... Last year smartwatch sales rocketed 155% to 4.6 million. The Samsung Gear was the market leader with 1.2 million sales. Smartwatch sales are expected to increase beyond 75 million this year. Apple Watch sales are expected to be between 10 and 20 million this year, priced between £300 and £13,500. CCS Insight chief of research Ben Wood said "The Apple Watch will become the market leader within 48 hours of going on sale and obliterate every other smartwatch to date in terms of volume." However the level of UK adoption is uncertain. A recent poll showed that only 60% of people in the UK wear a watch. Smartwatch penetration is only 1%. When questioned, 84% of people said they didn't want a smartwatch. 11% were undecided. History shows that the consumers are not the best judge. Everything will depend on functionality, Apple Watch app store content, design and price. If you wear a watch, would you be happy to put it in a drawer, pay all that money and wear an Apple Watch instead? Is it just another thing you'll have to charge up? Will it be a useless gadget that you will get bored with, throw in that drawer and wear your old watch again? Maybe it will be worth something on the Antiques Roadshow one day?

My opinion is that it will be a massive success of historic proportions, only surpassed by the iPhone itself - possibly not even that. Everyone will want one. It WILL be THE coolest thing to have, for a while and, if Apple and others can keep momentum going, this will just be the tip of the iceberg.

The smartwatch will never catch on, in the same way TV didn't.
