That being said, they made the screen with the glass being the primary impact point when it hits the ground. The result is: helicopter glass broken. The screen is also oleophobic. This screen regresses to it's old profile of being one unit with the LCD. This means a much more expensive repair.

The iPhone X is likely to be a phenomenal success for Apple. But its success will not be driven by anything new that the new phone packs inside. Instead, its success will be based on the phone’s screen size. Essentially, iPhone X provides the same screen real-estate as an iPhone Plus, but with the sleeker form factor of the iPhone 7 or 8.
Apple has done a great job at changing the paradigm of our thinking about the iPhone. If you only care about making phone calls, then an iPhone 4 is good enough. Why pay for more? You probably don’t even need to upgrade your phone for years, as long as the battery keeps holding its charge. However, for most, the actual “phone” function is the least important of the iPhone.
From an earnings perspective, iPhone X will be a tremendous boost. It will increase the average selling price per unit by a few hundred dollars, which should help not just sales, but profit margins as well. This is actually healthy for both Apple and the entire iPhone ecosystem (including DRAM and solid state drive makers — for example, we still have a large position in Micron Technology). People were also postponing buying new iPhones while waiting for the iPhone X; thus, the number of units sold will probably exceed most optimistic expectations.
Then the question becomes, What is next? Higher-priced iPhones will also change the dynamics of the upgrade cycle. Apple is going to have a harder time convincing iFanatics to shell out $1,000-$1,200 every year (or even every two years). The upgrade cycle will likely be elongating to three or four years. Thus, any blow-out success of iPhone X in 2017 and early 2018 will be coming at the expense of future years. Even if you are a loyal Apple shareholder, you have to be prepared for this.
Absent a new category of products, Apple is turning into a fully ripe stock. Yes, it will look statistically cheap based on 2018 earnings, but that will not be the case if you look at 2019 or 2020 earnings. As all the excitement subsides, Apple stock will have to answer an extremely important question: What is next? After all, the value of any business is a lot more than the earnings generated next year, but far beyond that.

Parent-adolescent conflict tends to increase during the teen years.  During this time, adolescents are striving to become more independent.  Parents may resist this change by not granting them the autonomy they desire.  Adolescents may defy rules or stretch boundaries. The transactions between parental control and adolescent rebellion can create feelings of resentment, frustration, or helplessness in the parent-adolescent dyad. Effective conflict resolution strategies are imperative to repair the situation and improve the quality of the relationship.  Here are some strategies you can use:

Have an open conversation. Oftentimes, conflict is not resolved because neither party knows what the source of the problem was or does not see the other’s point of view clearly. Encourage your adolescent to express his/her feelings. Invite them to tell you exactly why they are upset and listen when they say. This can allow you to understand the conflict that occurred from their perspective. It can also increase the quality of your relationship with your son/daughter. Validate what you have heard them say and then openly express yourself.

Keep an open mind. Be willing to change. As your adolescent is maturing and seeking more independence, perhaps adjusting your expectation of their roles and responsibilities is needed. 

Set reasonable expectations.  Conflicts often occur because adolescents are trying to assert their autonomy.  Talk with them about an appropriate timeline for when they can acquire certain privileges (i.e., curfew can be at midnight when you turn 18) and concerns that led to the limitations.

Compromise. Get rid of the power struggle that may occur during conflict by discussing a solution that both you and your adolescent agree on. Look for ways that you can both meet your objectives at least partially.

Model effective emotion regulation. Oftentimes when we are upset we tend to react by saying hurtful things or by withdrawing. Teaching your adolescent to tolerate their discomfort by managing your own emotions in the moment can be an invaluable experience.  Remember to be calm and resist the urge to react (i.e., say something hurtful or withdraw).  This can allow you to listen to your adolescent, keep an open mind, and problem-solve effectively.  It can also decrease the amount of tension you experience with your son/daughter.  Remember, when one person remains calm, it is very difficult for the other one to continue being reactive.

As I write in my latest book Small Datayears ago a group of scientists decided to investigate the phenomenon of ‘enclothed cognition’: the idea that when we dress up our personalities change.
The scientists asked a group of volunteers to wear a white lab coat and were given one that had been labeled “doctor”, “dentist”, or nothing. The research measured the respondents' behavior before and after.
To everyone’s surprise, those who wore the white lab coat originally hanging underneath the doctor signage were able to solve questions faster and more accurately after putting on the coat. They even witnessed an increase of self-confidence. Those wearing the dentist’s lab coat saw a slight improvement. Those wearing a lab coat with no signage witnessed no change at all.
Enclothed cognition is everywhere, but it is so subtle that we rarely notice it. Enclothed cognition is present when ladies dress up for the evening, put on high heels and suddenly feel more confident. It is present when businessmen aspire to get and wear a Rolex. It is present in the idea of Harley Davidson – which somehow seems to appeal the most to men hitting the midlife crisis. But it is also in the anamojis the new iPhone X holds.
As with most of the innovations, Apple has produced over the years, you can find traces of the core idea somewhere else, in this case in Sinji-ku, a suburb of Tokyo. Millions of people experience sleep problems every year. Many things can interfere with the duration and quality of one’s sleep and it is not uncommon to experience some periods of sleep difficulty in life. Sleep is an important aspect of mental health and sleep disruption can often be associated with other mental health issues including depression and anxiety. Mental health professionals and sleep experts have known for years that there are a number of fairly simple behavioral modifications that people can make to improve their ability to fall asleep. If you have been struggling with sleep, use these tips to get yourself back on track.


  1. Keep a schedule. This is easier said than done. Although it may be tempting to allow yourself to sleep in on weekends after a long week of early mornings, this can actually disrupt your sleep in the long run. Going to bed at approximately the same time most nights and waking up at approximately the same time each morning is essential, particularly if you are already having difficulty sleeping.
  2. Cut the caffeine. That cup of coffee might be the perfect jump-start to your morning routine, but you may want to reconsider sipping those lattes throughout the day or having that extra soda for an afternoon energy boost. Caffeine can impact people differently and sometimes indulging after even three in the afternoon can impact your bedtime routine. Many experts recommend you stop consuming caffeine at least four to six hours before you head to bed.
  3. Have a routine. If you have kids, you probably know the importance of the bedtime routine. For example, parents may do a bedtime snack, bath, pajamas, toothbrushing, and a bedtime story in the same order with their children each night before bed. Sometimes as adults, we lose this routine, but having the same evening “wind down” ritual each night can be very beneficial for helping you get into the mindset for sleep. Choosing a routine that includes the same few steps each night can help condition you to become sleepy at the time you want to be heading to bed.
  4. Limit the use of your bed. Your bed should function solely as a place for sleep and sex. Using your bed as a multipurpose space for television, work, etc. can break the association your brain makes between your bed and sleep. As with the nighttime routine, you want to train your brain so that it learns that when you’re heading to bed, you’re going right to sleep.
  5. If you aren’t sleeping, get up! In order to help train your brain to associate your bed with sleep, you have to also train it not to associate your bed with not sleeping. This means that if you are laying in bed fruitlessly trying to sleep, you should get up and get out of bed. 20 minutes is about the longest you want to allow yourself to lay sleepless in bed. When you get up, try to do something quiet, not particularly effortful, and not especially stimulating. Something like listening quietly to public/talk radio or a book on tape may be the perfect solution. Remember, when you do get tired, head straight to bed! Repeat as necessary if you continue laying awake once back in bed. It may also be useful to ditch the clock when you’re struggling to fall asleep. Staring at a clock tends to make people more anxious and frustrated, which is typically not conducive to bringing on sleep.
  6.  Beware of screens. More and more, experts are suggesting that electronics before bed are negatively impacting sleep. This occurs for a number of reasons including correlational issues like what you are doing on that screen. For example, playing an action-packed video game can increase excitement and wakefulness, and trying to get work done can increase stress. Additionally, some research suggests that the amount of time spent with screens in the evening is generally related to later bedtimes. However, one of the biggest problems with screen time before bed is how the brightness and type of light impacts overall wakefulness. Most experts recommend unplugging from our screens at least 30 minutes before bed, whereas others suggest up to two hours is best.
  7. Stop Napping. This may seem self-explanatory, but we all know the temptation of an afternoon nap when we didn’t sleep well the night before. Giving into that urge for a quick daytime snooze can become very detrimental to some people’s sleep schedule. Those daytime naps often cause you to be less tired at night when you’d like to sleep, which can become a cycle of even less sleep at night due to increased sleep during the day. If you find it difficult to get through the day without a nap, be diligent about keeping it to less than 30 minutes.
  8.  Exercise. Aerobic exercise has a number of benefits including helping to regulate sleep. For many people, vigorous exercise should be scheduled for earlier in the day due to the endorphins released causing an uptick in energy afterwards. The timing of exercise appears more important for some people than others.
  9.   Cut out the night-cap. Although consuming alcohol can elicit a quick onset of fatigue for many people, more than one drink close to bedtime is also associated with poorer quality of sleep and earlier waking times. Not to mention that it could also contribute to extra night wakening to use the bathroom.
  10. No noise or white noise. “Quiet” tends to be part of the ideal image for a bedtime space. Many find that the use of earplugs can help them achieve a “quiet enough” atmosphere, even while sleeping next to a snoring partner. Others, prefer white noise such as the constant whirring of a fan or use of a sound machine. The trick to using noise effectively is to pick something low, neutral, and constant. The variable noise of something like television or radio can actually hamper quality of sleep throughout the night.


Depending on your current sleep habits, making these changes during a rough patch of sleep can be very difficult. However, this can be worth the extra effort and can actually start to improve the onset and quality of your sleep in a relatively short timeframe. If after committing to these modifications for several weeks, you have not noticed an improvement in your sleep, you should speak with your physician.

There's a movement spreading across the world. Women and men everywhere are feeding off of the courage of many others, and stepping up to share their stories. We've all seen the stories and impact of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and rape headlining the news lately.

From the entertainment industry to the gymnastics and MMA world, I'm finally feeling a sense of unity from people of all backgrounds. Although I'd rather feel unity from something positive, I believe the courage given to others to say, "Me too," is a step in the right direction.

And, like others, I am ready to share my story.

A Little Background

My mother and biological father divorced when I was still a baby. Although many don't know it, I also have a brother who is 6 years older than me. It doesn't happen often as a result of divorce, but I stayed with my mother in Arkansas and my brother moved with my biological father to Ohio. We didn't see each other much, and summertime visits stopped by the time I was 8 or 9 years old.

My mother married the man I will always call my father when I was 3 years old. I was lucky, and to this day, I am thankful for everything he has done to help me become the person I am. Meanwhile, my brother was stuck with our biological father who married multiple women over the course of several years, and had countless children.

At some point when I was around 8 or 9 years old, my brother moved to Arkansas to live with us. He was 15 years old and always getting into trouble, and my mother thought we could help change that situation for the better. Unfortunately, my mother was wrong.

As a parent myself, I would have done the same thing, and for that, I will never blame her for what happened next.

Then, the Unthinkable Happened

I don't exactly remember what led to it. I've spent multiple years blocking it out of my memory. But, it happened. My brother began molesting me. I didn't fully understand what was going on, and I didn't want to tell a soul. He was only 15, and I was only 9, and I didn't even know what was going on to be able to tell that it was absolutely wrong.

One time, I vividly remember going on vacation. We stayed in a hotel room where there were two queen-sized beds. My parents slept in one, and my brother and I slept in the other. I remember him telling me to be quiet as I was silently molested with my parents asleep and only feet away.

After a year of living with us in Arkansas, my brother was eventually sent back to Ohio. He kept getting into trouble, and it was clear that my parents were unable to handle him at that point.

When he left, I remember feeling like I could breathe again.

I didn't hear from my brother or my biological father until 2014 when my mother passed away. After years of going through my issues silently, I decided to ask my brother one of the most important questions of my life, "Why?"

His answer, even after all these years? "All brothers and sisters do it." How ridiculous does that sound? Needless to say, I haven't talked to them since that conversation.

Fast Forward to Now

Some may wonder why I'm telling such a personal story. I didn't even open up to my parents about it until my mother was on her death bed, and about 6 months ago - I told my father for the first time.

I spent years feeling worthless, getting myself into bad relationships, and with low self esteem. These feelings elevated to a very unhealthy point when I had my first child. I finally sought counseling and medication for depression and anxiety, and eventually weaned myself off about a year later.

I'm telling you this story, not to get attention, but to continue to help me and others in the healing process. Because of so many others who have taken the brave step to share their stories, I feel like I can actually tell mine, and it's relieving to share it. I feel freer telling you, and I want you to know that you are not alone.

So, if you are a man or woman who has gone through sexual harassment, sexual assault or rape, don't be afraid to stand up and say, "Me, too."

7 top tips for effective spreadsheet design. Excel is a valuable business tool, and when spreadsheets are well built, they are a great asset. However, sometimes we can get into a mess. Here are some tips to stop you getting #hellwithexcel:-

1) Is a spreasheet really the correct tool that you should be using. Often people start out think that they need a spreadsheet - but in fact that need  a proper database solution.

2) Plan your work - the most common mistake - people jump in without thinking about spreadsheet design. I once had a boss who rebuked me because I wasn't producing anything. I told him that I was thinking in my head - which didnt go down well. However when weeks later when we started flying through the project milestones (and normally they were hellish) he offered his humblest apologies.

3) Colour code your cells -
   * a green cell is for input
   * a blue cell for a drop down
   * a white cell is for calculation
   * a yellow cell for an output or a total

4) Work from left to right - don't start your spreadsheet in the middle, and jump back / forth.

5) Use charts - the phrase a picture paints a thousand words is highly appropriate for data analysis.

6) Have different sheets for inputting data, calculations and output

7) Avoid long formulae - hard to debug !

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is here and rapidly gaining ground. Many jobs are being automated via technologies including artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things and cloud computing.
Research from management consulting firm McKinsey suggests less than 5% of occupations will become fully automated in the future. However, about 60% of occupations could see at least a third of their job tasks automated.
Technology is also increasing how fast our knowledge and skills are becoming outdated. A report published by Deloitte claims the half-life of learned skills is now about five years, which means what you learned to gain a degree or industry qualification could well already be out-of-date. 
The report, Careers and learning, Real time, all the time, also suggests our careers could last for 60 to 70 years – that’s a lot of constant learning to do.
Added to all this are global trends impacting the skills needed to do a huge number of jobs, ranging from digital transformation to our ageing populations and even climate change.
How can you stay relevant and employable in the face of all this rapid change? The key, based on our survey about skills completed by more than 2,000 people, including 951 employers, is to continuously upskill.
The majority of the employers we surveyed (77%) told us they were more likely to shortlist a qualified candidate who regularly upskills.
Employers told us that continuous upskilling shows a candidate is proactive, takes their development seriously, is genuinely interested in their field and is willing to put in the effort to stay up-to-date.
However, while 96% of the 1,253 professionals we surveyed regard upskilling as ‘very important’ or ‘important’ only a minority are putting in the work to ensure they are keeping up with the changing demands in their sector.
Don’t let that be you. As our CEO, Alistair Cox, has previously said, some of the best leaders he knows are role models for lifelong learning. It’s time to get on board with continuous upskilling.
Employers reveal the skills they value most
As well as keeping up with the technical know-how relevant to your specific job, employers are looking to see evidence candidates are developing the skills needed to solve new problems and collaborate with peers to exchange knowledge and ideas. Employers also want their people to be able to pivot to a new role or area of responsibility as things change.
Interestingly, our survey revealed most of the skills in highest demand with employers are soft skills - technical skills ranked 7th on the list.
The most in demand skill was “communication”, nominated by 77% of employers. This makes sense. As technology drives more of our work tasks, employers are looking to their people to make gains through the way they engage and build relationships both internally and externally as well as how they collaborate and communicate to solve constantly evolving challenges and problems.
“Adaptability” was next on the list of skills nominated by employers but a full 10 percentage points behind communication skills.
Not surprisingly, “digital proficiency in a new technology relevant to an individual’s job” was third (64% of employers).
“Innovation” was next, nominated by 63% of employers, followed by “critical thinking” (61%), “emotional intelligence” (53%), “technical skills” (43%), “self-learning” (40%) and “data-based decision making” (35%).
Coding was nominated by just 6% of employers.
Demographer Bernard Salt said in this article we should view change as an opportunity for growth and development instead of a threat to the status quo.
“The great challenge… is to engage, upskill, reskill - to actually bring everyone along in the journey,” he said.
It’s human nature to find change uncomfortable but to survive and thrive in the workforce of today and tomorrow we must not only learn to adapt to constant change but exploit it to build our careers.

Some of Apple's recent announcements are quite exciting. Apple AR and VR is certainly a nice move in the right direction -- a platform vision that allows for future growth. In fact, IOS 11 in general is a nice lift for iPad, and albeit nominal shift for iPhone.

What concerns me is the ego-driven product release cycle. Skip iPhone 7s, release iPhone 8 instead, and oh, wait, also skip 9 and release iPhone X. This feels 10x more like a publicity stunt than it does good consumer engagement. IPhone 7 was an acceptable evolutionary change from iPhone 6s, maybe most importantly because of adding waterproof design (even though I still dislike the lack of a headphone jack). The more people I talk to, I think the consumers really were happy with iPhone 6s, and would have been happy with the SAME phone with added waterproof design. I suggest this in reaction to the strong response to iPhone SE -- a classic form factor with updated internals, and people loved it, even more than Apple would like to admit.

I am all for innovation, but when ego and marketing drive delivery instead of maturing the tech, you end up with some of the same issues we are seeing: supply and manufacturing issues with iPhone X. A half-baked aesthetic of iPhone X (really? you LIKE that little cut-out for camera stuff on that screen?). Or even worse, a new generation of iPhone 8 and 8 plus that is selling terribly because people don't see any value over the previous model, or a big difference in perceived value with the "also" coming iPhone X.

This technogeek's opinion is that iPhone 8 was a complete waste of time. Better to have put the extra resources into making iPhone X something even more crisp. Don't skimp on the wireless charging tech. Make the screen perfect and beautiful without open doors for criticism, make sure all of the tech works perfectly and scales before announcing dates for preorder, make sure all suppliers are ready to meet demand. This is 101 stuff here, no company should jump that deep without planning better, least of all with ALSO trying to release a lackluster evolutionary design *JUST* because "we always do that."

In 1992, after I graduated college, software companies were booming and computer science was the place to be. Jobs were plentiful and technology was advancing quickly. But we didn’t have PCs, email, voicemail, internet, or cell phones. When we got back from lunch, we stopped at the reception desk to see if anyone had called and left a message – hand-written, of course.

Let that sink in. Try to imagine your life, your job, or both, without those technologies. Heck, there wasn’t even a user-friendly internet interface until the first version of Internet Explorer in 1995, and it didn’t really go mainstream until the early 2000s.

Fast forward to 2007. The software industry had changed significantly with PCs, email, voicemail, and the internet. During those 15 years, technology transformed significantly and software companies, for the most part, kept pace. In fact, the software industry was starving for these technologies and it was obvious how they should be integrated into software products.

Of course, we had cell phones, too. A lot of them even had cameras. Why would anyone want a camera on a phone? It seemed superfluous and unnecessary. But one more thing happened in 2007: Apple introduced the first iPhone to the world.

Fast forward again to the year 2018. Now we’re talking! Technology has advanced so rapidly between 2007 and 2018 that even the software industry can’t keep up. Today, toddlers are using iPads and talking to their smart home virtual assistants to turn on the lights, play music, and to help them learn their ABCs.

So while ERP software companies were busy trying to consume advances in internet browsers, operating systems, and Blackberries, the digital transformation in the consumer world was happening. While the consumer world was racing ahead, ERP software companies were stuck in the past. Technologies once considered superfluous and unnecessary became integrated into everyday life.

Then something happened. New generations entered the workforce and moved into decision-making positions, and they had higher expectations. This change is often attributed to Millennials. But while Millennials are certainly part of this change, Generation Z  is taking it to the next level.

There is no strict definition of a Millennial, but the term is commonly used to refer to someone born between the mid-1980s and the mid-1990s, while Generation Z, the post-Millennial generation, was born between the mid-1990s and mid-2000s. This is a meaningful difference because Generation Z grew up in the middle of the digital transformation and it changed how they grew up.

When Generation Z entered the workforce, the technologies that they use in their personal lives became requirements on product roadmaps – once seemingly superfluous and unnecessary technologies such as AI, machine learning, geo-fencing, OCR, virtual reality, augmented reality, natural language interfaces, the internet of things, social media, smart homes, and more.

So how do we deliver value to our customers and leverage these technologies that are now part of all of our lives? Any innovation built to make use of them needs to be more than just flash and fluff – it needs to be something that our customers will actually use and will save them time, so that they can focus on making their businesses more successful.

To make this real, let’s imagine a use case – a day in the life of a project manager in 2012, using the tools available at the time.

7 a.m. – Check email on your smart phone. Check your schedule for the day and join a conference call.

8 a.m. – Drive to a project site; join another conference call on the way.

9 a.m. – Arrive at the project site; open the mobile application on your phone, search for the project and check the status.

Noon – Drive to another customer’s office; spend the afternoon discussing a project with the customer.

4 p.m. – Head to the office; do your expense report and timesheet; take some calls and catch up on some email.

5:30 p.m. – Quitting time!

Now, let’s imagine this same use case in 2018.

7 a.m. – Check your email and schedule via smart phone; join a conference call and view the presented content through a smart home device while preparing breakfast.

8 a.m. – Jump in a self-driving car and head to a project site; join another conference call on the way, but this time participate by viewing content on the car dashboard (safely). While approaching the project site, receive a notification: “You’ve arrived at your project site, would you like to see a project status report?” Review the status report during the last few minutes of the drive.

9 a.m. – Pop the phone into a virtual reality device and, with the help of augmented reality, tour the project site. Receive detailed status and financial information on your heads-up display.

Noon – Drive to another customer’s office; finalize a presentation during the ride. Discuss a project with the customer; use the projection device integrated into your smart phone to show real-time analytics.

4 p.m. – Head home; along the way, take calls and catch up on email (safely). At home, your smart home device has a notification waiting for you: “Please confirm and submit the timesheet records I have entered for you today.”

Two identical days, using different technology, with two different outcomes. With today’s advances, you get home early and have an extra hour or two to plan long-term strategy and brainstorm with colleagues. Your timesheet (based on your location and activities) and your expense report (based on your applicable electronic payments) are already done; you simply need to confirm them.

I know what you all are thinking – seems superfluous and unnecessary. But so did so many prior advances that have now become requirements.

There is no doubt that the digital transformation is here and will continue at a faster and faster pace every day, week, month, year, and decade. It won’t wait for us, so we need to keep on innovating for our next generation of customers.
