Among the many headline making announcements at Apple's 2015 WWDC event, Apple announced that it was now making its development software, Swift, open source. This joins a long list of other open source code that developers within organizations are using to create bespoke or custom applications. While there aren't any license entitlement worries with open source, if the SAM manager is maintaining a definitive list of applications that the business uses, knowing whether the underlying code requires a license or is built on another platform that requires a license is critical. Should a security issue suddenly be discovered, it is essential that the SAM manager know which applications use that code. This info might be in an application development library, but having it in multiple databases will ensure redundancy that the applications can be quickly identified.
As the keeper of the definitive software list, do you think SAM managers should add open source to the database?
