MOBILE APP 2015- The Good to knows Mobile APP development as with any brand or product tends to be more about our own personal identification with the aesthetics, engineering and social status. When narrowed down to what makes an app, it is easy to see the where/how marketing falls into place. More often then not, we are all swayed by personal preferences. However, the creation of a solution should always stay focus on what it is you're trying solve and whom will you be targeting and where. Device manufactures vary, catering from low end to high end. What was once a flooded market pre-smart device era is now dominated by two platforms Android & Apple, it must be said that windows is starting to show their noses a little more nowadays, yet not significant to be a serious contender (at present). Understanding the platforms is easier said then done, manufactures adopting the OpenSource solution such as Android one would think "Great!" until each manufacturer decides to customise their own version of the OS. Luckily most customisation tend to be at the app presentation layer and currently dominated by four flavours of the OS - Ice Cream Sandwich Jelly Bean KitKat Lollipop.

Understanding the platforms is easier said then done, manufactures adopting the OpenSource solution such as Android one would think "Great!" until each manufacturer decides to customise their own version of the OS. Luckily most customisation tend to be at the app presentation layer and currently dominated by four flavours of the OS -
  • Ice Cream Sandwich
  • Jelly Bean
  • KitKat
  • Lollipop.

Apple on the other hand has the advantage of a proprietary system with only three dominant OS flavours as of July 2015
  • IOS 6
  • IOS 7
  • IOS 8

Android version snapshot - 2015.

For Android it is recommended to start from API 19 which covers from Version 4.0+.

Apple version snapshot - 2015.

For IOS it is recommend to start with IOS 7+.

IDC Research - "The worldwide smartphone market kicked off the year with an expected post-holiday dispersion in shipment volume compared to the previous quarter's unprecedented results. According to data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped a total of 334.4 million smartphones worldwide in the first quarter of 2015 (1Q15), up 16.0% from the 288.3 million units in 1Q14 but down by 11.4% from the 377.6 million units shipped in 4Q14. Android dominated the market with a 78.0% share in 1Q15. Samsung reasserted its global lead with a renewed focus on lower-cost smartphones.".

Right! so now you have the figures and you know exactly who/where/how you'll develop your APP.

"Slow down tiger".

Despite having the ability to upgrade your OS for both Android and Apple, you need to now look at how will your app perform and does your current target market have last years model which may or may not necessarily support NFC!? or have the storage capacity for more? or have the CPU grunt? Has your OS had security upgrades/threats to keep in mind? Will SWIFT, ReactJS, NativeSCRIPT and PhoneGap perform as expected? Is your language of attack fully featured yet!?

So obviously the above are just some of the points to keep in mind. Is there more you ask? well it all depends on what you're trying to solve or create. Just remember that APP Development isn't Web Development and having the right resources on board is essential.
