I recently retired my old HTC One to what I refer to as the Island of misfit technology, otherwise known as my empty sock drawer. I upgraded to the Samsung Galaxy S6. When I was shopping for a phone the very knowledgeable sales person at Best Buy mentioned the S6 Edge. For those of you unfamiliar with this phone it features a curved edge display, that according to the commercials will let you discreetly check on things without any one being the wiser and does a really neat light show if one of your favorite contacts is trying to reach you. Now I like to consider myself trendy but I decided to forego the edge for the regular S6 just because I think the implementation of the beveled edge would serve no real purpose for me other than just looking really really cool. But as with all things new and exciting we have to stop and take a closer look at where these baby steps are taking us.
Techno Tuesday - Fold-able Cell Phone Technology
Foldable, and transparent displays have been around for a while now, but they have remained just concept rather than actual products and are the stuff of Hollywood fiction (remember a little film called Iron Man, yes Mr. Stark I want your phone, house, lab, and definitely your car).

And despite all the curved smartphones, like the one my friend at Best Buy tried to sell we still haven’t seen a truly flexible or bendable phone.
Now, a report from Business Korea hints that a truly foldable smartphone could hit the market as early as 2016 from none other than my very own cell phone maker Samsung.
An unamed official from Samsung stated that although foldable screens may seem highly futuristic, the time is right for this mind-bending technology. “The industry believes that the commercialization of fold-able smartphones will be possible in 2016.”

One only needs to take a look at Samsung's 2010 marketing materials to see where this technology could lead us.

Now granted the video above is from 2010 and we are probably at least 5 to 10 years away from holding this sort of product in our eager little fingers, but it’s still fun to imagine a world filled with flexible screens. And who know's based on the patents below they may be here sooner than we think.

So, until next Tuesday, here's hoping you do like SKYNET and become truly self aware.

Thanks for reading,
