Google is full of surprises these days. First it announces the realignment of business strategy with Alphabet at the helm, now it wants to help homeowners and businesses go solar. Introducing Project Sunroof, a “treasure map” of solar energy giving detailed information about how much solar power you can generate and how much you can save on electricity by just adding some silicon.
Using 3D-modeling Sunroof can calculate how much the space the roof has for solar panels. It also takes a look at the sun position over the roof over the course of a year as well as the type of cloud cover, the temperature the area experiences and the number of sun hours, and even the amount of shade cast by nearby trees, fireplaces and other obstructions. Pretty cool stuff.
Harnessing the sun rays can save money on the ever increasing energy bills and decrease dependence on foreign oil and greenhouse-gas-producing fossil fuels. A win-win right?
Did we mention that now until the end of 2106 you also get a 30% tax credit? Now we are talking. For now, unless you live in Boston, San Francisco or Fresno (odd), you will have to wait for this service. But Google plans to expand the service to the entire county, so to be continued!
What are Google's intentions for this move, one can only guess to provide very valuable data to the very hungry for leads solar energy.
