Online Marketing (SEO) Basics All Website Owners Must Know!

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is really just a part of a larger concept called Search Engine Marketing (SEM). SEM encompasses SEO, and you can say that SEM is marketing SEO, with emphasis on the word "marketing".

While SEO is what gets you started in SEM, it's not the one that will bring you the money. You could rank for all the keywords that you like on Google and other search engines, but it does NOT mean you will automatically earn money from your rankings. In order to make money, you need to understand a few marketing SEO concepts.

* The consumer's buying cycle 


Not all people who go to Google and do a search are looking to buy stuff. Some people just want information because they're curious about a product. Others, meanwhile, are ready to buy and are only looking for confirmation that the product actually works. People who are ready to buy are already at the end of the buying cycle, and these are the people you will want to target. 

You can tell the curious researchers apart from the ready buyers from the keywords that they type on the search bar. People who type "what is…." are only curious while people who type in "buy…." or "… review" are ready to buy. 

* Hair on fire brings you the money 


Hair on fire really just means embarrassing and painful problems that people want to solve NOW, not later. If you're just about to build a website, you can build your website around a certain painful problem that people have. Go for the so-called evergreen problems (problems that most people have all the time) including problems related to love, money and embarrassing diseases like warts. 

* The keyword conversation 

Not all keywords are created alike and people really have different things in mind when they type certain keywords. In other words, they each have a different keyword conversation going through their minds. People who are really good at marketing SEO know this and try their best to cater their content around that keyword conversation.  

As you can see from above, being very good at SEO is NOT enough to make you earn money online through Search Engine Marketing. You also need to have a clear understanding and a strong pulse for what goes on in the mind of searchers when they type in their search terms, that is, if they're ready to buy a product or are desperately looking for a solution to their problems. 

The SEO landscape has changed over the last few years because of the updates that Google released to its algorithm. However, it's only the ranking algorithm has changed, the basic SEM concepts haven't. Remember that it's the people who are going to buy from you, not the search engines, and it will definitely do you good if you know how to push people's buying buttons when they arrive on your website. If there's one advice we'd like you to repeat over and over again, it is this: always get into the keyword conversation.
