As 2015 draws to a close, I like to look back and take a look at what my team atBIG and I felt were going to be the hot technology trends of 2015. Were we on point or wildly off base? When we create our technology trends of the year – there is research, thought and a lot of common sense that goes into picking what we feel will be the top tech trends.
Every once in a while there is a trend we call out that seems certain to take off – like wireless charging which we predicted in 2014. It still hasn’t made the breakthroughs we thought it might however don’t rule it out just yet.
The balance of the trends:  the Internet of Things, Big Data, the Visual Web, Payments and Drones stayed hot in 2014 and reappeared on our list on 2015. In addition to our list for 2015 we added Automatic Media Creation.
The Internet of ThingsThe Internet of Things really took off in 2015 with the wearable’s market in terms of mind share. Everything that is wearable right now has some connection in being able to gather and harvest data. This data is really leading the Internet of Things charge at the moment. The more robust the data we can glean off our devices – the more important these devices become in our everyday lives.
Big DataBig Data has seen an incredible amount of tools that can collect and harvest big data. We have seen incredible education move forward in this area and the job market in the data sciences is increasing as these type of educated positions become more in demand. It is really becoming a big and critical industry. It's no surprise that Big Data is fuelling a lot of innovation right now.
PaymentsThe big story in payments that led in from last year is Crypto. This definitely continued into this year on the payment side. The price of Bitcoin has come down substantially but the volume of Bitcoin has more than doubled over the last year. There has been an incredible amount of resilience in the Bitcoin space which continues to push along an economy that is built around economical payments. With the introduction of Apple Pay, this space will continue to be extremely active. It’s the battle ground for a lot of big companies. Watch out for the Internet of Payments which Blockchain is leading.
The Visual WebVisual Web is hot because it is how our brains think. 80% of our brain is wired for recognition of visual events. The visual web encompasses how you are making purchasing decision to how you are experiencing the world. Augmented reality is part of this and will definitely continue to explode in innovation and mindshare over the course of the next few years. Purchasing on the visual web will also be huge. Taking an image of what you want and being able to purchase is an on demand retail visualization that will soon become an expectation of the consumer.
