The communal table is one of my favorite spots in every Philz store. After I grab my drink (a Tesora with honey and cream), I like to sit down and check out the scene - observing work being done and energetic conversations happening. The furniture is different, the customers are different, but at every store, the feeling is the same.
As we’ve grown, we’ve focused on creating an experience, a gathering place that brings people together. We see ourselves as being in the people business, not just the coffee business, which is why we take a human-centered approach to everything we do. We want to create the best experience for every customer, and make it easy for Philz to be a part of everyone's day.
Today, we are taking a big leap towards this goal. I’m very excited to announce that the Philz App is officially launched and available in the Apple app store now (with Android coming soon).
I’m so proud of our team and collaboration with Work & Co for creating a different kind of mobile experience. We didn’t view this project as a piece of technology for a phone, we viewed it as an opportunity to extend the Philz experience of connection and personalization. When you order with the Philz App, you get to meet the Barista making your coffee. Other cool features include:
  • Discovery + Easy Ordering: When you open the app for the first time, you’ll see our Favorites page which includes 6 recommendations of popular Philz blends . As you begin using the app and ordering, we learn what you love and begin saving your favorites so you can easily reorder in just one tap.
  • Full Drink Menu: The app offers all the coffee and tea drinks found in your local store. Click the Menu tab in the app to find your preferred blend and discover new flavor profiles to shake up your go to order.
  • Convenient Pick-Up: In addition to customizing your order, choose your pick-up location and time that works best for you.
Download and try out our app today then tell us what you think by emailing support@philzcoffee.com. We pay attention to every piece of feedback that comes through. Our team will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the Philz app is the best it can be.

Great Sound? There’s an app for that!

It seems there’s an app for everything these days. Some are useful, some are entertaining, some are confusing, and some are nearly worthless!
When I set out to write the book, Great Church Sound, I wasn’t even considering getting into the mobile app development game. But that all changed one day when I was chatting with a friend and was saying how cool it would be to be able to practice mixing sound on a phone or tablet – safely away from the critique of a live audience.
And so, Great Church Sound, the mobile app was born. And I couldn’t be happier!
There are loads of tips and bonus material included in the app, as well as two utilities I’m especially excited about - including…
Multi-track digital practice mixer
This was one of the most rewarding parts of the app to develop and test. The virtual digital mixer includes three tracks of professionally recorded audio (graciously provided by the talented Mark Roach at MarkRoachMusic.com). This allows you to practice mixing a vocal track, guitar/piano track, and drums/percussion.
Not only that, but you can practice EQ-ing each instrument. This will greatly assist you in getting a feel for how different frequencies affect different instruments.
And there’s a compressor. And a reverb/effects channel.
We tried to include the basic elements that are part of every live mix so that the novice and aspiring audio engineer can get a feel for each component, practice, and then apply that new knowledge to a live mix on a physical console.
Frequency Analyzer & SPL Meter
One of the last components that was added to the app at the last minute was the real time frequency analyzer and SPL (sound pressure level) meter. This utility allows you to see, in real time, what frequencies may be peaking - helpful for finding frequency hotspots or training your ear with feedback frequencies. And of course, you can monitor the overall volume level at your location.
Download the app today!
So, give it a shot! It’s a great free app that could really help your church sound team get great sound!
Download it for Android or Apple iOS devices. And let me know what you think – this is for you!

Why Apps Are the Future of Marketing
Two app-centric buyouts happened back in February: Rakuten buying messaging app Viber, plus Facebook buying the WhatsApp messaging app; so what does this all mean to the marketing industry, plenty actually.

Telcos: for whom the bell tolls

Consider now the simplistic mission of WhatsApp – to be a mobile messaging platform, to be exact, a messaging platform WITHOUT advertising. Yes, marketing and investor types alike will say this is hearsay, that without advertising dollars to fund and grow the business it will not be viable.
That’s not to say it’s without a price tag, the first year to WhatsApp is free and after that a yearly subscription fee of just 99 cents. Executives at telcos the world over must be shivering at the mere thought of what the future could look like if a Facebook backed WhatsApp becomes the norm for how we communicate “over the phone.”
Deloitte’s 2014 TMT Predictions research suggests that overall voice calls are getting shorter from just over three minutes in 2006 to about a minute and 45 seconds in 2011. Fast forward to 2014 and hopefully you still call your Mom, though, you’re probably texting or just outright using some form of messaging app or social network with everyone else.

My share of wallet?

Let’s for a minute though put ourselves in the shoes of the customer, it’s great to remind the corporate heads of companies the share of wallet concept; but let’s not forget at the end of the day, we’re all consumers first and foremost. So, if we all put ourselves in the role of the customer first – why wouldn’t anyone shell out a mere 99 cents to pay for an app that easily lets you message your contacts with no advertising to distract the user?
Especially in the digital age where almost every marketer is now focusing on lead generation, SEO, SEM and content – all for what – to create a funnel so at the end of the day you can build personal relationships with a mass niche.
The reality is, the best brands know that it’s not B2C or B2B, it’s H2H: human to human.

“We want advertising” – said no one ever at WhatsApp

How can the best brands create a lasting relationship with a customer: give them something they will want, something with feel-good value and what’s better than connecting with someone? This is the secret that the two co-founders of WhatsApp intrinsically understood, that by focusing only on the customer experience and leaving the advertising side of the business out of their workday they could perfect the user experience and technology behind the messaging app.
The oft quoted “Build it and they will come” approach certainly worked with WhatsApp. Spread through word of mouth and the appeal of a universally low price point. Along with an intuitive user experience that works on smartphones and the majority of basic Nokia phones still in circulation in many developing countries, this app will soon enough be business school textbook case study course material.
Are apps the future of digital marketing though? Let me rephrase that and emphatically state that apps are the future of ALL marketing….
How?
What other medium has that Holy Grail approach of gaining such trusted status as to voluntarily place that medium on your most sacred of personal devices: your smartphone?

Rethink marketing as relationships not metrics

Marketing’s mission, especially for the brands that get it, is to build relationships by connecting on a human level – think of the recent Coca-Cola America is Beautiful Super Bowl ad or the Red Bull Felix Baumgartner free fall from the edge of space video.
Building relationships by offering utility takes the app experience to a whole new level. Case in point is the US-based, Express app that integrates with your Express credit card so you scan and pay for your jeans or blazers in store, all from your iPhone. (unfortunately for us Canadians, this scan and pay thru your phone and walk-out functionality its still only Stateside… any Canadian banks willing to take up the charge?)
Leaving Canadians out of the scan from your phone and pay feature aside, this is true utility. In others words of all the marketing metrics we try so hard to achieve with click-thru rates or time-spent or lead-generating conversion funnels – an app, especially an app done well that provides utility (read engagement, loyalty, word-of-mouth and the most important of metrics overall: actual dollars spent on product) could very well be the savior of the marketing industry

Useful Apps for Lawyers in 2016
Are your 2016 New Year’s resolutions stating to flag? Are all those good intentions for doing things differently at work rapidly disintegrating into the ether, as you wrestle with the same old issues that got you so frustrated and worn down by the end of last year?
If you’re anything like me, new years’ resolutions that don’t make an immediate difference to your life rarely stick around past February….but, if you’re a lawyer – either new to the profession or long in the tooth - deciding to get to grips with some relevant and time-saving apps now available on your mobile or tablet – might be a resolution worth making for 2016…
And the reason? Because as we hurtle toward 2020, the breadth of free applications now on offer to help lawyers and law firms save time, work smarter and therefore serve clients more effectively has never been greater…
So, to point you in the right direction, here are my current top five android apps for legal professionals. (I'll be reviewing apps available to iphone and ipad users in a future post).
1. smartLEGES
For lawyers working across borders - smartLEGES offers a powerful law reader containing a comprehensive database of legislation from fifteen countries including the UK, USA, France, Italy, Spain, Brazil, and India. You don’t need to be connected to the internet to do some reading. And if you’re worried about getting eyestrain because of tiny letters, you have the option to change the font size of the reader as well as the font’s colour, background colour and screen brightness.
2. Voice Recorder
For those client meetings that are just too complicated or demanding to be able to take accurate notes and you don’t have access to a trainee to take them for you, the Voice Recorder app ensures that you don’t miss any crucial details. Voice Recorder allows you to send the recorded file as an attachment via Gmail so you can listen to it on a computer, allows you to save a bunch of recordings by title and date, and, if you’re aiming to be discreet, you can pre-program a time for when you want Voice Recorder to start recording.
3. Documents To Go
If you’re a lawyer on the go who regularly needs instant access to important documents in clients’ files then the Documents To Go app, may be a great addition to your smart phone repertoire. Using this free app you can view any documents generated using Microsoft Word, Excel or Powerpoint, in both older .doc formats and newer .docx formats. If you’d like to edit and create documents on the go in those formats, then you have the option to purchase the full version, which supports password protected Word and Excel files, and provides file transfers from your phone to your computer using Documents To Go’s desktop app.
 4. Scan2PDF
Again for lawyers on the move, Scan2PDF is like having a scanner, photocopier and a fax machine all packaged neatly into your back pocket or hand-bag. Using your phone’s camera to take a picture copy, you can convert one or more pages of an important document into a single, compressed and enhanced PDF for easier browsing later. The PDFs are also saved to your phone’s SD Card, giving you the option to e-mail them to yourself, a client, a colleague or to download later to a computer.
5. New and Improved LinkedIn App
Finally, any review of useful mobile/tablet applications for lawyers has to include the new LinkedIn App – available for both android and iOS devices.
For time poor lawyers, any technology that can help make the most of their time out of the office meeting with clients or prospects, has to be of interest. That said, a useful new feature offered by the redesigned LinkedIn App now allows members to filter a search for potential clients or referrers by location. So if you have a meeting already confirmed in one city, you can set up other meetings in the same city very easily.
For a step by step guide on how to use this feature – see my colleague, Emily Miller’s recent post on the new LinkedIn App here.
Though I wouldn’t claim to be an expert user of the first four applications suggested above, I do train lawyers on how to use LinkedIn to stand out from their competitors and use it as an effective tool for business development and marketing activities. If you would like to find out how LinkedIn could help grow your practice, I’d love to hear from you.

Best Financial Apps for 2016
If you’ve been searching for ways to simplify your budget, your phone or tablet can be one of the best tools available. There are tons of options for apps in the personal finance category, so next time you’re checking out the app store, be sure to look these up. Here are five of the best financial apps to keep your budget in check:
1. BUDGT –  If you’re looking for an app that does basic budgeting beautifully, this is the one to go with. In BUDGT, you put in your monthly income and what you need to allocate to different categories, and it gives you visual representations of your transactions. It’s also freelancer and contractor friendly, so it’s easy to update an income that changes. You’re also able to create custom categories and alarms to remind you to pay your bills. Keep in mind that you need to manually log your expenses with this app, but for someone new to budgeting, that can be a great skill to build awareness.
2. Level Money – This is an ideal app for someone who wants precise budget tracking that is updated in real time. You connect the app to your bank account, and from there it gives you a host of personalized financial information. It calculates what you make each month, what your recurring bills are, and how much you can spend over a given time period. Level Money also figures an amount you should save each month, and gives you the option to set up an auto-save amount.
3. Acorns – If you’re wary to start investing, Acorn will help you get started little by little. This app does the investing for you with your spare change. You connect your checking and credit card accounts to it, and Acorn takes whatever is left from the nearest whole dollar to invest. For example, if you spend $3.50 on ice cream, Acorn will invest the remaining $0.50 without you having to do anything. You are free to invest only your rounded up change, or you can add lump sums as you go. Your spare change will be invested in low-cost exchange-traded funds. You shouldn’t necessarily build your entirely portfolio around this kind of investing, but if you’re brand new to the investing world, this can help you learn about the process at a smaller scale.
4. Wally – Wally is a fantastic app if you’re looking to really track your expenses. It gives you an at-a-glance picture of your spending, savings and goals. You can view your expenses based on date, category or location, and you can even scan your receipts to save spending data. If your budgeting pitfall is wondering where all your money goes, Wally is a great way to start tracking that data.
5. Mint – Chances are you’ve heard of Mint by now. It’s definitely one of the most used personal finance apps out there, and it gives you an overall picture of your financial health. It tracks information from your bank accounts, loans, 401k, credit cards and more. It tracks spending automatically and lets you know when you’re about to hit budget limit, so if you are someone who forgets to update your budget, Mint does the work for you. All of your data is shown in user-friendly graphs and charts, which is another feature that makes it so popular.
You know where your financial strengths and weaknesses lie. If your budget runs smoothly on the envelope system, then by all means, keep it up. But if you’re still struggling to track and assess your finances, there’s an app to help you get up to speed.

Top 16 Apps for 2016
Here is a list of top apps you should have and be actively using. Most of them are free!
  1. Evernote. The grand-daddy of all note-taking apps, Evernote keeps getting more and more powerful at the same low price of FREE! I use it to take notes, to make to-do lists, to scan receipts, to write blog posts, and so much more. Start writing on the desktop, sync to your mobile, and vice versa.
  2. CamCard Free. Take note! Camcard is the easiest app to manage and exchange business cards.
  3. Dropbox. A great way to move files around from desktop to mobile and vice versa.  You can use this all the time with slide decks – make them on the desktop, sync them to the iPad, and you’re ready to go.
  4.  Goodreader. For those times when someone’s got a peculiar file format, Goodreader is the Swiss Army Knife you can use to get it open. I actually use this to show slide decks too – I find it’s better and easier for sitting down next to someone and swiping through a slide deck than the Keynote app.
  5.  Goal Tracker & Habit List. Superstars are all goal setters and this free app is your easy-to-use goals checklist. You make your goals list and check them off each day/week/month. It keeps your goals in front of you and gives you the satisfaction of checking a completed box.
  6.  GTasks. Synchronize your To Do List with Google and keep your calendar clutter free.
  7.  Waze. For anyone who commutes, Waze is a powerful GPS app. Social GPS lets you interact with fellow travelers to report police, hazards, traffic jams, and much more. Hard to believe it’s still free.
  8.  Google Voice. In concert with a Google Voice account, this app consolidates your voicemail and text messages into one spot and offers mostly good voicemail-to-textconversion, which can be handy to see what a caller had to say.
  9.  Kindle app. If you’re not learning, you’re not growing your professional skills.“Working on yourself” is an important part of a growth mindset. The Kindle app syncs with your Amazon eBook purchases and lets you continue to grow while on the road.
  10. Audible Not enough time for all the books you want to enjoy? Download this app and listen to books on the go.
  11.  Google Currents. One of my favorite news apps, you can get an incredible amount of relevant news from various blogs and publishers in one location. I grab Forbes, Fast Company, The Atlantic, XConomy, Venture Beat, Entrepreneur, and a few other publications in here for more brain food.
  12.  iTunes U. This app syncs with your iTunes U selections in the iTunes store. There’s an amazing number of courses in iTunes U from dozens of respected universities.
  13.  Social network native iOS apps. The networks’ individual apps – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn – are useful and helpful if you’re doing social marketing. The Google+ app still leaves a lot to be desired, but all of them are free and worth having if you’re doing social marketing or social sales.
  14.  CudaSign. You now have the ability to sign documents on the spot using your iPad!
  15.  MileIQ. If you track your miles, this app is a must-have! Once installed, your phone will track where you’ve been through GPS and send you a notification to classify your miles as business or personal. No more log books and no more guessing how many miles you drove!
  16. Your turn:  What are your Go-To apps?  Share in the comments below.
