Apple, a delight to have one in pocket and other on the table. We all know Apple Inc. for its knack of creating disruptive products which breaks the old norms and changes the way we do things.
At no other place on earth, you will pay such a premium on price with a broad smile as you do while buying an Apple product. It brings a lot style statement, ease of use and trust that Apple has garnered over the years. All Apple products created a lot of market roar at time of launch, and Apple Watch has been no different. Haven't had my hand on it but from all secondary interaction through videos and other channels, I believe its going to be a cult product.
Everybody is building or planning to build their apps for Apple watch, and gaming industry is no different. Robot 5 Studios are all set to launch a football game on Apple watch and so does other players. In betting and gaming space, Ladbrokes Australia and William Hill have launched their betting app on Apple Watch.
But I would like to take the discussion to a more fundamental level, to try and identify where does Apple watch fit in the gaming world and what implicit or explicit needs it can address? To answer this we need to analyse why mobile and tablets became the single focus area of market growth for B&G companies.
Mobile phones and Tablets provided additional flexibility of quick access and ease to carry which were absent on both laptops and desktops. So traditional gamers and gamblers quickly adapted to the increased availability of gaming services on the mobile devices. Advancements in smartphone technology corroborated by reduced data transfer and storage costs, led to a world where we are connected to internet almost all the time. In a nutshell, Mobile smartphones and Tablets addressed the need for staying connected everywhere under the sun.
But before we go forward, lets answer a question to ourselves. Given ample free time, where you would like to read your email, on your laptop or your Mobile?
Now with Apple Watch also joining the bandwagon of mobile devices from the house of Apple, I am trying to find where will it exactly fit in the broader ecosystem of connected devices for gaming. Mobile devices became successful because of their increased flexibility over Laptops and desktops. But we need to access what additional mileage will an Apple watch offer to a gamer or gambler.
In terms of increased availability, I don't consider apple watch scoring more brownie points over a smart phone. You can very easily take your mobile to every nook and corner, so Apple watch extends no real value on those terms. When it comes to Game play, the kind of visuals and effects you are able to get on your smart phones, seems a distant reality on Apple watch. So I don't think it will have a huge impact on core gaming, but I believe it will find more success initially as an device to receive all ancillary gaming communication.
So from a new market open to bet, a poker tournament about to start, to a follow up on your betting and gaming activity or navigation to your nearest gaming shop, be ready to get all those gaming notifications on your wrist. It will certainly help betting and gaming companies to know more about ghost players.
On a closing note, I greet Apple watch as a tool with immense potential for increased communication with devices and systems but still not very sure of its big bang impact on core gaming.
Would like to get your views on how you see Apple watch as a device for multi-channel convergence.
