Apple Watch vs. Android Wear - A Comparison
Apple announces the date for Apple Watch’s market debut on April 24 in the US and many other countries. Three (3) prototypes will be released with comparable interface and functionalities. While Apple marked the release date, Android Wear is already available in the market. Android Wear is a shared operating system to six existing watches from third-party manufacturers such as Motorola, LG, Samsung, and Huawei as Google does not makes its own devices. Android Wear varies in physical aspects and prices as it has different manufacturers. However, since it’s a shared OS, functionalities are seemingly similar.Apple Watch is a bit costlier than Android Wear as it parades the prices from USD 350, 550, and 600. For sophisticated and luxurious edition of these watches, prices may go up from USD 10,000 to 17,000. While the latter’s price seems expensive, Android Wear devices sells from USD 200-300.
Android Watches does not offer an on-watch call features or menu list of apps, though availability of apps is there. Unlike Android, Apple Watches have these features and its home screen is virtually an app launcher.
Androids are more open to third-party developers increasing the chances of discovering breakthrough app solutions. This is more of an advantage than iOS’ limited or none third-party access on Apple apps. Apple Watches relies on iPhone and only enables data display, but without an iPhone the usability of these watches decreases dramatically. However, this premise does not affect the Android Wear as it can be used without any android phone. It is a fully operational OS that works just like any Android phone.
Lastly, energy efficiency may be of concern. However, Android watches have the edge as it can last up to 2 days of battery life while Apple only has an 18 hour battery life.
