Finnish tech giant Nokia has been trending in the news as of late because of two reasons: First, Nokia has just acquired the iconic French telco equipment and networking giant Alcatel-Lucent. Second, rumors abound in the tech industry that Nokia would re-enter the smartphone market once its exclusion period agreed to with Microsoft expires late next year. Nokia on its part, however, was quick to deny that it would re-enter the smartphone market. On its official statement, the erswhile phone giant, reaffirms that it currently has no plans to manufacture or sell consumer handsets.

CURRENTLY NO PLANS:

that's the operative phrase. My gut-feeling says Nokia's just being wise. I believe that Nokia would re-enter the highly competitive yet highly profitable smartphone market next year. With a very strong brand name, and with the recent success of N1 tablet in China, Nokia would pursue a similar strategy --- license the Nokia brand to manufacturers (i.e. Foxconn), actively participate in its production and marketing, sell quality product at a competitive price, and target Emerging Markets who came to know Nokia as their first-ever phone.

I'm sure many people would love the return of Nokia.
