That being said, irony indicates to the timing of Google’s release of Mobilegeddon. It was released on April 21st of 2015, less than a week after the European Union alleged Google search engine was systematically giving favorable treatment to the Google Shopping, its price-comparison service.

Objectives of Google Mobilegeddon at a glance:

  • Penalize sites being not mobile-friendly
  • Sites having too small texts to read on smartphone screen
  • Tricky links too difficult to open with the tap of a finger

Due to the growing trends among consumers to access the Internet or sites via smartphones, Google zooms in on returning those sites only in its SERPs which can adapt to the latest usage patterns.

As put in Google’s own words:

As more people use mobile devices to access the internet, our algorithms have to adapt to these usage patterns.

This latest change in Google’s mobile-search results doesn't seem to discriminate against the rivals, but to de-rank those sites not conforming to ‘mobile-friendly pattern of Google’.

N.B. On June 11, 2013, Google rolled out an algorithm, which cannot be likened to Google Mobilegeddon, because that time it was mainly a pack of recommendations by Google citing common configuration mistakes, usually made by webmasters. Google wanted them to be carried off of their sites so smartphone users could comfortably engage with the sites.

Now Google wants a downcast of all ‘Mobile-un-friendly’ sites from its SERPs. Unless you un-follow stickiness to desktop-only design, you're unlikely to survive the Armageddon of Google Mobilegeddon.

That Google regularly and consistently updates its algorithms is an open-and-shut case. While few of them are made public, most of them remain undiscussed. The last one that created a buzz across the web and shook the whole kit and caboodle of Digital Marketing was the Google Penguin update, dated April 24, 2012.

Since then, no such Algorithm did match with the blows of its kind. Like that time when Penguin impacted an estimated 3.1% of English queries, this time also the impact of Mobilegeddon might cross the limit beyond any guess! Already, Google mobile-friendly test flunked over 40% of websites.

With the reports of almost all websites trying out this test since its release, it underlines how vital this technical change is for an SEO Company which targets to rank highly in Google’s results.

Sites which show up among the first hits are likely to be clicked on.

This release of Google’s search algorithm shows how hard it will be to ensure that the company treats its own and rival services equally. Results coming out of the Google Mobilegeddon test will produce losers and winners. So, now it’s a judgement call for you to decide whether you want to be trashed or come out as a survivor. Don’t worry if your site is already mobile-friendly.

Ensure every web page of your site is mobile-friendly as this runs on a page-by-page basis.
