Google’s New Logo — Let’s Hope They Love It
Google has entered the world of rebrand with Alphabet and now refresh with it’s Google Logo. It was time for the logo update, so not surprising. From here let’s hope they love it, because they won’t want to be making any more changes for awhile. This change didn’t require great feats of bravery, it’s not breakthrough, but it is super functional and this fits the brand. Good choice.
Some of the other options that have been shared, thank you FastCoDesign, looked more graphic, playful and interesting. But in the end, I imagine they didn’t stand up to the “what does your brand stand for” test. If your logo doesn’t represent your essence, that is; what you are most passionate about, best in the world at, and make money at doing, everyone will call you out. It will be an uncomfortable fit, and users / consumers / business partners will feel it. The new Google logo doesn’t shake it up, but it still feels like Google.
In fact, the new Google logo will likely work better than it’s wordmark predecessor, in that it’s more like way finding signage. They kept it super simple and close to something you already know, removing the risk of confusion. It does it’s job, and we can all go on about our day. This is not an Air BnB, strong and wrong own it campaign, or a Gap, “how could you do it?” logo discussion. Simplicity wins. The End.
