The Apple Watch cannot convince me. Primary use case for any watch is reading time. Everything else is bonus. But a watch which needs to be recharged every day is like a handcuff. You cannot even do a short trip over the weekend without having a power plug in range. This happens when a computer company attempts to produce watches. And that's the biggest mistake. But because smartwatches are cool gadgets, a lot of people may buy them regardless o f this fact. Anyway Apple may fail this time. For a pricing range starting at 399 EUR (and ending far beyond 10.000 EUR for the luxury models) the watch provides at the end of the day not more functionality than already available Android Wear Smartwatches.

You cannot even do a short trip over the weekend without having a power plug in range. This happens when a computer company attempts to produce watches. And that's the biggest mistake. But because smartwatches are cool gadgets, a lot of people may buy them regardless o
f this fact.

Anyway Apple may fail this time.

For a pricing range starting at 399 EUR (and ending far beyond 10.000 EUR for the luxury models) the watch provides at the end of the day not more functionality than already available Android Wear Smartwatches.

But don't expect much for the 399 EUR - this is the price for the small model with a rubber band. You probably want to have the bigger model, which costs 50 EUR more. If you prefer a classical looking band or a milanaise band, you have to add another 169 EUR. If you like leather, it will be additional 269 EUR. But you can also pay 499 EUR for a band made of steel.

It's up to you to decide if a band made of steel can be worth 499 EUR. I would expect that such a band is made by elves from holy-water hardened magical steel and that it will be delivered by Apple's regional manager directly to my door.

Well... According to Apple it takes more than 9 hours to finalize one of these bands and that they are be hand brushed.

But even if it is made entirely by hand in china, labor costs per unit will be likely not more than 20 EUR (AFAIK a Foxconn employee get's between 200 and 300 EUR per month for 12 hours per day). Add a maximum of 1 EUR for the 316L steel and some EUR for infrastructure. I would bet that the band costs Apple not more than 30 EUR per piece (likely to be much less) , but i may be wrong.

Be aware that the only assets the Apple Watch can currently claim are the Apple Logo, good choice of material and a nice looking User Interface. But the question will be: Is this enough?

Some may like the design but design is a question of taste - for me the Apple Watch doesn't look too good - it somehow remembers me on old Casio calculator watches from its form factor.

People interested in the new Apple Watch should have in mind, that they need an iPhone too. Without an iPhone even Watches from the rummage table will outperform the Apple Watch. So - if you do not already own one of the newer iPhone models - you have to add at least another 399 EUR to your bill.

The entry level "system price" for the Apple Watch is 798 EUR. For the small basic model and an iPhone 5C. Quite expensive for a Watch that will run out of power after one or (in best case) two days. And people who prefer Android or Windows smartphones have bad luck.

I'm sure that the next generation of the Apple Watch will come soon and it will provide a better battery, a better display, a thinner case and a design that comes closer to real watches.

But if Apple (or any other manufacturer) doesn't find a way to ensure, that the basic functionality of every watch - showing the time - can be used even if the smart stuff runs out of power, than Apple (or any other manufacturer) has to wait probably a long time until the really big success comes.
