The mobile device is the remote control for our lives
Mobile phones really shape our lives, they are so customizeable that it changed the "internet of me" from the old "internet of things." The smartphone is truely smarter than ever. Data is larger. The possibility to customize dozens of experiences each day is out there. What can you do for ME?
A record 1.3 billion smart phones shipped worldwide in 2014. Not only markets are growing but age groups are growing. My parents got iPhones last year, something I'd never thought I'd see. They aren't alone. smartphone purchasing is now older and younger than before. How often do you see a 5 year old with a phone at the mall? Parents use the phones for connecting, safety and entertaining. And the same can be done in reverse.
In 2014, Americans spent more time on an their smartphone than watching TV or on a laptop computer. They spend an average of 151 minutes per day on their smartphone. For companies who have little or no mobile precense, you are falling off a cliff. People are searching your restaurant from their car, searching for a dental office when they have an emergency, reading the latest news while at work.
It could be argued that you should spend more time on your mobile site than your full site. How does it look on an Android, iPhone, do you have an app, do you need an app?
It is estimated that 20% of internet searches are location-based. So people not only search for product, they search for location. What's a good restaurant around them right now, a good dentist around them right now, a parking spot available around them right now? And this trend is on a huge climb, with nearby searches climbing 5X since 2011.
You need to make sure that you are giving your customer the best possible experience on their smartphone. Make it easy too. One-click ordering, interactive maps and local inventory options are three ways to get this started.
In future blogs I'll talk about connecting your life across multiple platforms and how Internet speed is changing our whole life.
