Search Engine Optimisation(SEO) might be different depending on what you have experienced. Not all SEO is dodgey, but not all is worthwhile.
Let’s consider why you might even want SEO:

  • You have a business, and your business has a website
  • You want people to visit the website
  • You also want the website to be found......including by people who weren’t directly looking for the website

Good SEO will help (a lot) with the last point.

Links to your site

You may have heard that links to your website from other sites are good for your SEO rankings, they are. This means relevant links to other sites that visitors of your site would also visit.

Here’s what a bad link looks like:

  •  A free blog site set up with repetitive text content written by someone who set it up solely to put links to your site. The writing is probably no better than what a young child might produce. There is a good chance that there was someone on Fiverr who had that “blogging” work outsourced to them.
  • Google, in this guide on SEO says that word-of-mouth(organic) links to your site is one of the most likely factors to increase your SEO rankings.

Google uses the principle of reputation, it works like it does in the real world.

How would you treat a referral from someone you did not trust? You probably wouldn’t trust it, neither would Google. Over time, Google will increasingly distrust that referrer(the fake website) as it becomes clear that it is a source of referrals that cannot be relied upon.

  • Links from low reputation websites do not help your SEO rankings in the long term. (long after you’ve paid the invoice)

Video

You may have heard that video is good for your SEO rankings, good video is. Here’s what isn’t good video:

  • A video on youtube of a screen capture showing a user clicking around your website to the tunes of elevator music.
  • What the above is, at best is a website demonstration video, but it would add zero value to actual website visitors. Google will see to it that it adds zero value to your SEO rankings.

The principles of reputation apply to video too.

These examples might sound odd, and looking at them you may think that there is no way that you’d want to order these kind of things for your business. The thing is, that they are exactly the kind of things that some “SEO specialists” use, whether they tell you about them or not.

What should you do then?

Google says this in its guide:

“Creating compelling and useful content will likely influence your website more than any of the other factors discussed here”
That can be a hard thing to do, and there are no short-cuts to quality.

  • Google is saying that your site should accurately represent your business and be useful to your customers.
  • Once you lift away all the internet and technology speak, defining what SEO is can be simple.

Next time you are offered SEO with (or without) a website, ask yourself how well that provider will actually be able to understand your business.
