These are not the iPhones you're looking for. (or: why Apple doesn't want you to think they'll introduce two phones on oct. 4th) Yesterday, +Cedric Ingrand theorized that the invitation to Apple's press conference had clues telling us they'll introduce one phone, not two. Yet we're almost certain there will be an "improved iPhone 4", so that would mean... no "true" iPhone 5. Aaaaaarg, the world is cruel! I think Cedric is right: that is what they are telling us. But I also think they will technically introduce those exact two phones: iPhone 4S and iPhone 5. Ok, anyone who doesn't have an incredible amount of time to waste on these kinds of ridiculously empty theories has stopped reading. We're now amongst annoyingly obsessive tech geeks / Apple fans. Just thought I'd point that out. :)

So, to resolve this "1 phone = 2 phones" conundrum, you have to think in terms of communication, and what Apple wants the media to remember and report after the event.
If they indeed have two phones to announce, the situation is different from previous announcements. Usually, they just lower the price of the previous one, and introduce the new, big, cool, new, awesome Jesus phone. The old one becoming the low end model is just a formality, and the focus and media attention are squarely on the new model, which is really what you want for a new product.

Now think of this time: if they do have an updated (and cheaper to manufacture) old product as well as a really cool new product, they don't want people to talk about two confusing options, one old new phone, and new new phone, with weird details and explanations...
What they want is a simple story to sell the media: "Apple has the coolest new phone out there". And when people got to the store, yeah, they'll also have the cheaper option there (with the halo of "Apple is the coolest").
So they will introduce (and downplay) the new version of the iPhone 4, but the story will be the iPhone 5, and that is what they have been starting to prepare (and condition / jedi mind trick) the media for. These are not the iPhones you're looking for. The phone you're looking for, the only one that matters, the only one we're talking about, is this one. iPhone 5, center stage. TADAAA! whaaaaaa.... Applause, media frenzy, consumer brainwashed, mission accomplished.
